“ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರೆ ನನಗೆ ಜೋರಾಗಿ ಮಾತಾಡೋಕೆ ಬರಲ್ಲ ಏನು ಮಾಡೋದು ಅಂತ ಯೋಚನೆ ಮಾಡ್ತಾ ಇದ್ದೇನೆ ಮೈಕ್ ಇಲ್ಲ ಇಲ್ಲಿ. ನಾನು ಮೂರನೇ ಕ್ಲಾಸಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದಾಗ ಒಂದು ಕಥೆ ಓದಿದ್ದೆ ನಾನು.  ಏನು ಕಥೆ ಅಂದ್ರೆ ಒಬ್ಬ ರಾಜ ಇರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅವನು ದೇಶ ಸಂಚಾರ ಮಾಡತಾನೆ. ಆವಾಗ ಒಬ್ಬ ಮುದುಕ ಹಣ್ಣುಹಣ್ಣು ಮುದುಕ ತೆಂಗಿನ ಮರ ನೆಡೋದು ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತೆ ಅವನಿಗೆ. ರಾಜ ಆ ಕುದುರೆಯಿಂದ ಇಳಿದು ಹೋಗಿಬಿಟ್ಟು ಆ ಮುದುಕನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಕೇಳ್ತಾನೆ “ಅಲ್ಲಪ್ಪ ಮುದುಕ ನೀನು ಇಂದಲ್ಲ ನಾಳೆ ಸಾಯೋ ತರಹ ಇದ್ದಿಯಾ ಯಾಕೆ ತೆಂಗಿನ ಮರ ನೆಡತಾ ಇದ್ದೀಯ?” ಅಂತ ಕೇಳ್ತಾನೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಆ ಮುದುಕ ಹೇಳ್ತಾನೆ “ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ನೀವು ಯಾರು ಅಂತ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.” ರಾಜ ಅಂತ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ ಅವನಿಗೆ, ಮಾರುವೇಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುತ್ತಾನೆ ಅವನು. “ಆದರೆ ನಾನು ಇವಾಗ ಕುಡಿತಾ ಇದ್ದೀನಲ್ಲ ಎಳ್ನೀರು, ಆ ಎಳ್ನೀರ ಮರವನ್ನ ನಾನ್ ನೆಟ್ಟಿದಲ್ಲ. ನಮ್ಮ್ಯಾರೊ ಪೂರ್ವಿಕರು ನೆಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು ಇವತ್ತು ಅವರು ನೆಟ್ಟಿದನ್ನ ನಾನ್ ಕುಡಿತ ಇದ್ದೇನೆ. ಇವತ್ತು ನಾನ್ ನೆಟ್ಟಿದ್ದನ್ನ ನನ್ನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಮೊಮಕ್ಕಳು ಕುಡಿತಾರೆ ಮತ್ತು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸಮುದಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಜನಸಮುದಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗುತ್ತೆ.” ಇದು ಬಾಳ್ವಿಕೆಯ ಬದುಕು.

ಇವತ್ತು ನಿಮಗೆ ಅಂದ್ರೆ ನಾಳೆ ಬಾಳಬೇಕಾದ ನಿಮಗೆ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪೂರ್ವಿಕರು ಏನು ಉಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ? ವಿಷವಾದ ಗಾಳಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆಯ್ತಾ, ವಿಷಮಯವಾದ ನೀರನ್ನ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ, ವಿಷಮಯವಾದ ಆಹಾರ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರು ಏನನ್ನೂ ಉಳಿಸಿಲ್ಲ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನ ಧ್ವಂಸ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಕಾಡು ಧ್ವಂಸ ಮಾಡವ್ರೆ ನೀರು ಧ್ವಂಸ ಮಾಡವ್ರೆ ಭೂಮಿ ಧ್ವಂಸ ಮಾಡವ್ರೆ ಇಂತ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಅಂದರೆ ಏನಪ್ಪಾ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಆಗುತ್ತಿರುವುದು? ನಿರುದ್ಯೋಗ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಆಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಆಗುತ್ತಿರೋದು ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಯ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳ್ಳೇದಲ್ಲ! ನಿರುದ್ಯೋಗ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ದಿ ಆಗ್ತಾ ಇದೆ. ಹಾಗೇನೇ ಇನ್ನೇನು ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಆಗ್ತಾ ಇದೆ? ಬಡವ ಬಲ್ಲಿದರ ನಡುವೆ ಅಂತರ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಆಗ್ತಾ ಇದೆ ಬಡವ ಬಲ್ಲಿದರ ನಡುವೆ ಅಂತರ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ ಆಯ್ತಾ, ನಿರುದ್ಯೋಗ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ ಆಯ್ತಾ ಅದನ್ನ ಏನಂತ ಕರಿಬೇಕು ಅದನ್ನ? ಇವತ್ತು ಅದನ್ನ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಅಂತ ಕರೀತಾ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ ನಾವು ಹೇಳಬೇಕು ಉದ್ಯೋಗ ಇದ್ಯಲ್ಲಾ? ಅದೇ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಅಂತ ಹೇಳಬೇಕು. ಬಡವ ಬಲ್ಲಿದರ ನಡುವೆ ಅಂತರ ಕಮ್ಮಿ ಆಗೋದು ಇದ್ಯಲ್ಲಾ? ಅದೇ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಅಂತ ಹೇಳಬೇಕು. ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಯಾವಾಗ ಆಗುತ್ತೆ ಅಂತಂದ್ರೆ, ಕೃಷಿ ಆಧಾರಿತ ಕೈಗಾರಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಆಗ ಮಾತ್ರ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಆಗುತ್ತೆ. ಬಡವ ಬಲ್ಲಿದರ ನಡುವೆ ಅಂತರ ಕಮ್ಮಿ ಆಗುತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಉದ್ಯೋಗ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ ಆಗುತ್ತೆ. ನಮ್ಮದೇನೋ ಕತೆ ಮುಗಿದುಹೋಯಿತು. ನೀವು ಬಾಳಿ ಬದುಕಬೇಕಾದವರು ಇದನ್ನ ನೆನಪಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು.”

“Friends I really cannot speak loudly, so i’m wondering. There is no mike here. When I was in the third standard I had read a story. The story goes like this – there was a king. He is on a travel through the country. He spots a really old man planting a coconut tree. The king gets down from his horse and asks the old man “ Old man, you look like you will be dead and gone today or tomorrow. Why are you planting a coconut tree?” he asks. So the old man tells him “Sir, I don’t know who you are” He doesn’t recognize the king since the king is there in disguise. “But the coconut water that I drink today, that wasn’t from a tree that I planted. The coconut tree that was planted by my ancestors, that is the coconut water I drink today. That which I plant today my children, my grandchildren will drink and it will be there for the whole community.” This is a life that is truly lived.

Today, for you who have to live through tomorrows, what have the generations before left you? They’ve given you poisonous air. They’ve left you poisonous water. They’ve given you poisonous food. They didn’t save anything, they completely destroyed everything. Destroyed the forests, destroyed the water, destroyed the land. In such a situation what is development? What is it that is being developed? It is unemployment that is being developed. What is being developed in the name of development isn’t a good thing. Unemployment is being developed. What else is being developed? The gap between the poor and the rich is being developed. The gap between the poor and the rich has become more? Unemployment has increased? What should we call it? Today they are calling it development. We should say employment is development. The decreasing gap between the rich and the poor that is development. This will happen only if there is an agriculture based industry and then the gap between the poor and the rich will become less, employment will be created. Our story is over.
